Take a guess, what percentage of an average server is normally used, what is the average CPU usage?

100%? – Cold, cold, very cold…

80%? – Still cold.

50%? – Not even lukewarm.

We’ll let you into a secret: an average server will do good to reach 20% in terms of its utilisation.

This means that the server does not exploit its available performance for virtually all of its operating time, and in terms of its average load only about 20% of its CPU resources are used.

Of course there are – a few – applications that constantly keep servers running at a high level, or periodically use all of the available CPU capacity for “peak loads”. Fact is though, the majority of servers run at well below their actual capacity and performance.

When the server is idle or running at a low load or capacity:

  • it consumes electricity and draws electric power;
  • it generates heat loss, and “heats” the server room;
  • it requires IT operation and monitoring;
  • a server running at a marginal load requires the same space and infrastructure in a server room (cables, network, power, console, etc.) as servers running at high capacity.

These result in significant costs that translate into services at a very low rate of efficiency.

What is more, the majority of these costs (e.g. electricity and cooling, server room installation costs) are difficult for an IT policymaker to take into consideration, and so they are often omitted from normal cost calculation.



The good news is, most of this ineffective expense can be saved!

Server virtualisation offers a great solution to this problem.

We combine several separate physical servers (separate hardware and software environments) on a common server (common physical hardware). These previous servers share these physical resources (processor, memory and disk capacity) in a virtualised and still separate software environment, and run on the same platform. What used to be physical servers become virtual servers and virtual machinesThe resources of this common server are utilised to a much higher level because they are supporting not just one service but all of the virtualised servers running on the physical server (virtual server). A special operating system optimised for virtualisation runs on the common server.

The loads of the individual virtual machines differ from one another in terms of time, and so their periods of higher and lower loads compensate for one another to some extent – this means the consolidated and aggregate peak load will be smaller than the maximums of the individual loads (“consolidation effect”).

Since hardware sizing is based on peak load, the virtualisation results in savings thanks to this “consolidation effect”.
